Ella is graduating this year and I will be capturing some photos for her formal later this month, however before the big day, we decided to take a moment to work on some poses and help her feel comfortable in front of the camera doing what ‘feels’ awkward at the time but ultimately looks great afterwards.

What to wear to a photography session?

Choosing an outfit can feel daunting so I popped over a little earlier so we could go through her wardrobe and pick out a couple of outfits that she felt comfortable in. Sometimes I think it’s best to not overthink it too much. Often the first choices are the best ones.

After selecting three different outfits we began our session attempting to break through the nerves and capture some genuine smiles and flow through some nice poses.

Breaking through the nerves…

One of the most helpful ways I’ve found to help break through the nerves is to share some images on the back of the camera screen. When someone is in a slightly awkward pose (arm here, hand ruffled in hair there, pop that leg, tilt towards me… type of pose) it can be assuring to show them the results of their efforts. They begin to feel a little more relaxed, soften up and begin to trust your suggestions. By the third outfit change, Ella felt so much more relaxed, twirling her dress, walking slowly, tilting her head this way and that, and even the requested forced giggles turned into real laughs at the end.

After the Session

With Ella being so busy with finals and exams, I arranged an online gallery for her to view the photos we captured. We will discuss which ones she liked the best and work toward capturing similar poses when she is in her formal dress.

Stay tuned and come back to see the formal photos in the coming weeks.
